The Reading: Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let
your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about
anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Questions for Reflection
When St. Paul wrote these words, he believed
that Jesus would return in his lifetime and in the lifetime of the believers to
whom he wrote. That’s the meaning of
“the Lord is near.” Given that it has
been over 2,000 years now since the death and resurrection of Jesus, how do we
keep our hope alive for his return? How
can we continue to follow Paul’s advice to rejoice, pray, be gentle to
everyone, and give thanks to God, even if we no longer have the certainty that
Jesus will return in our lifetime? What
